Almost Still Life, installation and performance

Through his work, Salgado challenges the boundaries between public and private spaces by placing himself on the very centre of the public and private arena. In the Franssintalo exhibition space, he has reconstructed his private art studio. During the first four Sundays of the exhibition, in January 2004, the artist can be found working within this room, assembled by him with EURO pallets. Here, the artist takes the role of the performer, and questions one’s position within the broader, social, political and cultural context.

Salgado’s work aims to narrow the gap between the public and the artist by bringing them into a close contact during the process of making the art work. What is important in Salgado’s art installation and performance, is the process itself which is both the finished art work and its consequence. Treffit is, so to speak, a casual encounter between the artist and his public.

Turussa asuva taiteilija ja itsenäinen kuraattori Sílvio Salgado haastaa töidensä kautta raja-aitoja yksityisyyden ja julkisuuden välillä asettamalla oman yksityisen ja julkisen tilansa tarkastelun kohteeksi. Franssintalon näyttelytilaan hän on luonut rekonstruktion omasta yksityisestä ateljeestaan. Näyttelyn ensimmäisenä neljänä sunnuntaina tammikuun 2004 ajan taiteilijan voi löytää työskentelemästä tästä huoneestaan, joka on rakennettu puisista EURO-siirtolavoista. Täällä taiteilija asettaa itsensä esiintyjän rooliin - nostaen esille kysymyksiä julkisista ja yksityisistä sosiaalisista, polittisista ja kulttuurisista rooleistamme.

Salgadon työn tavoitteena on kaventaa kuilua taiteilijan ja yleisön välillä tuomalla katsojat läheiseen yhteyteen taiteilijan kanssa tämän tuottaessaan taideteosta. Keskeistä työssä on se, että Salgadon

installaatio ja performanssi ovat itsessään tämä tuotos. Varsinainen taideteos on koko tämän prosessin seuraus. Treffit on kuin vapaamuotoinen tapaaminen taiteilijan ja yleisön kesken.

Satu Jaatinen: ALMOST STILL LIFE

We all know what an artist is like. He is a loud and colourful figure whose life is either spectacular feast or creative suffering. Everyday he makes a host of decisions that we normal people are too afraid or too ashamed to realise. After all, you know, he is the artist, the somewhat unconventional character. But, is any of us able to relate hard working with the life of an artist? Sílvio Salgado gives viewers a possibility to follow the everyday life of an artist - that facinating prosess of creation - for a while. He transfers part of his private life, part of his working space, to the public domain for us to see. 

The restricted working area gives the artist the possibility to concentrate on his work, and for the viewers to follow it. The space is either private or public, depending on the viewer's interpretation. For the artist, it gives a context for work and exhibition, or the possibility to be part of a reconstruction of his private atelier. For the viewer, the marked borderline gives the possibility to either remain in his by-stander role and follow, or he may, if he so wishes, enter through the opening and become part of the art installation.

Kaikki me tiedämme, millainen on taiteilija. Hän on värikäs ja äänekäs hahmo, jonka elämä on joko näyttävää juhlaa tai luomisen tuskaa. Hänen arkensa on täynnä ratkaisuja joita me normaalit ihmiset emme uskalla tai kehtaa totetuttaa. Onhan hän taiteilija, sellainen hieman erilainen persoona. Mutta osaako kukaan meistä yhdistää taiteilijan elämään raskasta työntekoa? Silvio Salgado antaa katsojilleen mahdollisuuden seurata hetken taiteilijan arkea, sitä kiehtovaa luomisen prosessia. Hän siirtää osan yksityisyttään, palan työhuoneestaan, julkiseen tilaan meidän nähtäväksemme. 

Työtilan rajaus antaa taiteilijalle rauhan työskennellä ja näyttelyvieraalle vapauden seurata. Tila on joko yksityinen tai julkinen, aivan miten katsoja sen haluaa tulkita. Taiteilijalle se antaa raamit esiintymiselle, työskentelylle tai mahdollisuuden olla osa työhuonettaan esittävää asetelmaa. Katsojalle rajaus antaa mahdollisuuden joko pysyä roolissaan ja vain seurata tai hän voi halutessaan astua oviaukosta sisään osaksi työhuoneen asetelmaa.
