"Much depends on the Viewer" is part of a series of art events held twice a year, spring and autumn, at the VIENNA INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT on Linke Wienzeile 4. The space is a private apartment located in a building which houses both commercial and living spaces.

VIENNA INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT provides a new platform for the arts within the Viennese art scene, bringing together artists from different cultures and backgrounds. It opens an arena for discussion on issues involving art practise. As an "independent space", VIENNA INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT addresses the limits and boundaries within and without public and private spaces. The choice of the exhibition space as such addresses the concept by redefining the private nature of the habitat making it public. This reflects the development in contemporary art practise: the move from one-purpose spaces to fora with multiple simultaneous functions. Questions are raised through the works: how do we negotiate the relationship between the private and the public, and how do we relate to it?

Part of the exhibition goes beyond the Apartment, as Paola Junqueira's performance "24 Hours of a Hole" takes place in the middle of the Karlsplatz square.

"Much depends on the Viewer" brings together nine artists from Brazil, Great Britain, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Austria. The media explored by the artists include drawing, painting, photography, installation, object, video and performance.

Birch's work "Blind Faith" is a piece about landing sites and being grounded. She sees it as a comment on freedom and longing; about the fantasy of freedom, about journey, place and exile. The main concerns in her art practise have been involved with landscape and myth. Her work is photographic, text and video based. Birch lives and works in Great Britain and Portugal.

Chetwynd's work has consisted mainly of performances and video, but recently she started making paintings. In this medium, she developed two main painting practices: portraiture and documenting performances. In her portraits, she explores human expressions of ugliness, unfamiliarity and humour. Her series of portraits comes from tracing the works of the old master's drawings and copying faces from magazines. Chetwynd lives and works in London.

Krüger's main work medium is photography. In her latest work, she depicts "constructed landscapes" - different types of vegetation against a blue sky. On the first sight, her images appear familiar to us, but the longer we stay with them the more unfamiliar they become. They open ground for discussion on computer manipulated images and their authenticity as such, and in contemporary photography as an art medium. Krüger lives and works in Vienna.

Jelinek works with the media of photography, video and installation. Her video "Angels don’t need Health Insurance" questions our fears and desires to go beyond our own limitations. In her work, she captures social and political aspects of contemporary society, such as consumerist desires. These manifest within her work through an acute observation of everyday life, human gestures and behaviour. Jelinek lives and works in Vienna.

Junqueira's "24 Hours of A Hole" grew out of her desire to take the limits of the absurd to an extreme. Her actions also suggest the need of all human beings to construct a space for themselves. For her, the unexpected foregrounding of incidents, coincidences and improvisation plays an important role in the work. She documents her "site work" through the use of video and photography. Currently she lives and works in Geneva. The " 24 Hours of a Hole" takes place on Karlsplatz on 9 - 14 Oct.

Reneses's series of drawings titled "I know now that I can land only in one place" reflects her interests in the notion of space and the way we negotiate the different possibilities and limits that space can offer. In her own words, "the notion of responsibility cannot be avoided by today's space

disturbances". Through her drawings, she explores the exterior space, the representation of territory through maps and landscapes: scale, location and dislocation. Reneses commutes between London and Madrid.

Strand's work poses questions about masks and sexual identity. She explores the notion of concealment, veiling, and the act of drapery. Her interest is in many respects grounded in an interest in buildings, parcels as well as dwellings. Strand mainly work with video, performance and installations. Recently she started painting. She currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Traquino's "Inner Landscapes" consists of an installation with three similar objects which contain three different elements familiar to most households: salt, linen and rice. In her own words, "these elements are related to the memory of a wise and intimate relationship between Man and Nature. (...) I propose a different look valuing their potential as metaphors that evoke certain landscape contexts." Traquino lives and works in Lisbon.

Wagner-Weger's work operates in a field of art that establishes a relationship between the artist and an audience. Her work is often politically critical and it opens possibilities for social interaction, exchange, communication and cooperation. In her work improvisation plays an important role. She makes use of multiple media such as language, text, photography, video and performance. Wagner- Weger lives and works in Vienna.

"Much depends on the Viewer" ("Viel hängt vom Betrachter ab") ist Teil einer Reihe von Art Events, die zweimal jährlich, im Frühjahr und im Herbst, im VIENNA INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT an der Linken Wienzeile 4 statt finden. Die Ausstellung befindet sich in einer privaten Wohnung eines Gebäudes, in welchem Wohnungen als auch Geschäftsräume untergebracht sind.

VIENNA INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT bietet eine neue Kunstplattform innerhalb der Wiener Kunstszene. Es bringt Künstler verschiedener Herkunft und Erfahrung zusammen und ermöglicht eine Arena für Diskussionen über neue Entwicklungen in der Kunst. Als unabhängiger Raum thematisiert VIENNA INTERNATIONAL APARTMENT die Grenzen und Schranken innerhalb und ausserhalb öffentlicher und privater Räume. Die Wahl einer Privatwohnung als öffentlicher Ausstellungsort unterstreicht dieses Konzept. Dadurch widerspiegelt sich eine Entwicklung in der zeitgenössischen Kunstpraxis, nämlich die Bewegung vom Einzweckraum zum Forum mit mannigfaltigen gleichzeitigen Funktionen. Fragen werden aufgeworfen durch die Werke: Wie gehen wir mit dem Spannungsfeld zwischen Privatem und öffentlichem um und wo positionieren wir uns darin?

Teile der Ausstellung sprengen den Rahmen des Apartments, wie Paola Junqueira's performance "24 Hours of a Hole", welche mitten auf dem Karlsplatz statt findet.

"Much depends on the Viewer" bringt neun Künstler aus Brasilien, Grossbritannien, Portugal, Schweden, Spanien und Österreich zusammen. Gezeigt werden zeitgenössische Werke aus den Bereichen Video, Installation, Photographie, Zeichnung, Malerei, Objekt und Performance.

Birch's Arbeit "Blind Faith" handelt von Landeplätzen und von unserem Erdgebundensein. Birch sieht ihre Arbeit als Kommentar über Freiheit und Sehnsucht, über die Fantasie von Freiheit, über grosse Reisen, Ort und Exil. Hauptsächlich setzt sie sich in ihrer Kunsttätigkeit mit Landschaften und Mythen auseinander. Für ihr Werk benützt sie Fotografie, Text und Viedeo. Birch lebt und arbeitet in Grossbritannien und in Portugal.

Chetwynd arbeitete bisher hauptsächlich mit Performance und Video. Seit kurzem malt sie auch. In diesem Medium entwickelte sie hauptsächlich zwei Verfahren: das Portraitieren und die dokumentarische Performance. In ihren Portraits erforscht sie den menschlichen Ausdruck von Hässlichkeit, das Unvertraute und den Humor. Für ihre Portraitserien benutzt sie Zeichnungen alter Meister oder Gesichter aus Magazinen als Vorlage. Chetwynd lebt und arbeitet in London.

Krüger's wichtigstes Ausdrucksmittel ist die Fotografie. In ihrem neuesten Werk zeigt sie "konstruierte Landschaften": verschiedene Arten von Pflanzen ragen gegen den blauen Himmel. Auf den ersten Blick scheinen uns ihre Bilder vertraut. Aber je länger wir sie anschauen, desto fremder werden sie uns. Sie ermöglichen eine Diskussion über Computer manipulierte Bilder und deren Authentizität und über ihre Funktion als Kunstmedium in der zeitgenössischen Fotografie. Krüger arbeitet und lebt in Wien.

Jelinek arbeitet mit Fotografie, Video und Installation. In ihrem Video "Angels don't need Health Insurance" ("Engel brauchen keine Krankenkasse") fragt sie nach unseren Ängsten und unseren Wünschen, die uns gesetzten Grenzen zu sprengen. Weitere Arbeiten thematisieren soziale und politische Aspekte der gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft, wie zum Beispiel unsere Konsumwünsche. Ihr Werk zeichnet sich durch scharfsinnige Beobachtung menschlichen Verhaltens und Gebarens und des Alltagslebens überhaupt aus. Jelinek lebt und arbeitet in Wien.

Junqueira's "24 Hours of A Hole" entsprang ihrem Wunsch, die Grenzen des Absurden herauszufordern. Ihre Aktionen geben zu verstehen, dass alle Menschen das Bedürfnis haben, sich ihren eigenen Raum zu schaffen. Das unerwartet Vordergründige von Ereignissen, deren zufälliges Zusammentreffen und die Improvisation spielt in ihrem Werk eine wichtige Rolle. Ihr "site work" dokumentiert sie mit Video und Fotografie. Zur Zeit lebt und arbeitet sie in Genf. "24 Hours of a Hole" findet am Karlsplatz vom 9. bis 14. Oktober statt.

Reneses's Serie von Zeichnungen mit dem Titel "I know that I can land only in one place" widerspiegelt ihr Interesse am Raum und an unseren unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten im Umgang mit ihm und mit seinen Grenzen. Dazu meint sie: "Die Frage nach der Verantwortung kann nicht ausgeblendet werden angesichts des heutigen problematischen Umgangs mit Raum". In ihren Zeichnungen erforscht sie den Aussenraum, die Darstellung von Territorium durch Karten, durch Skalieren, Abstecken und Verschieben. Renses lebt und arbeitet in London und Madrid.

Strand's Arbeit wirft Fragen nach Maskierung und sexueller Identität auf. Sie erforscht den Begriff des Versteckens, des Verschleierns und den Akt des Verkleidens. Dahinter steht ihr Interesse an Gebäuden, Parzellen und Aufenthaltsorte der Leute. Strand arbeitet hauptsächlich mit Video, Performance, Installation und neulich auch mit Malerei. Zur Zeit lebt sie in Stockholm, Schweden.

Bei Traquino's Arbeit ”Inner Landscapes" handelt sich um eine Installation mit drei gleichen Objekten, welche je eine Substanz enthalten, wie man sie aus dem Haushalt kennt: Salz, Leinsamen und Reis. Dazu sagt sie: ”Diese Substanzen erinnern an eine kluge und enge Beziehung des Menschen mit der Natur. (...) Ich schlage eine andere Sichtweise vor, welche den metaphorischen Verweis dieser Stoffe auf bestimmte Umgebungen in den Vordergrund rückt." Traquino lebt und arbeitet in Lisbon.

Wagner-Weger siedelt ihr Werk in jenem Kunstgenre an, welches die Beziehung zwischen KünstlerIn und Publikum in den Vordergrund stellt. Ihre oft politisch kritischen Arbeiten ermöglichen soziale Interaktionen, Austausch, Kommunikation und Kooperation. Improvisation spielt in ihrem Werk eine wichtige Rolle. Wagner-Weger benutzt verschiedene Medien wie Sprache, Text, Fotografie und Video. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Wien.
