building dwelling thinking across the horizon line, work III
Site-specific installation, drawing, photography and text
by Sílvio Salgado
18 - 31 July, 2009
The Portuguese artist Sílvio Salgado has created a site-specific installation for the Vienna International Apartment (V.I.A.) exhibition which opens in Brussels on 17 July.
For the first time since the first V.I.A. exhibition in 2001, the works are found entirely outside the actual V.I.A. space, as they have taken over the building's entrance hall. In stead of bringing the public in the privacy of the Apartment, Salgado has brought the exhibition to the threshold and passage point between the inside and the outside.
Salgado’s site specific installations approach interior design and architecture. His works challenge traditional notions about the placement of art works: the work is more about place than it is placed. In his previous installations, Salgado has worked directly on the surfaces and structures of the location. His installations cannot be considered apart from their location, be it a museum, a gallery, a private apartment, an open square, or a garden. The transient character of Salgado’s artworks reflects the artist’s own transient existence of moving between cities, countries and continents.
Sílvio Salgado is currently living and working in Brussels, Belgium.
